A Need for Strategic Calm

Congratulations to Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob for taking up the mantle of the ninth prime minister of Malaysia. There is nothing normal about the situation; it could not have been scripted but it has kept the spectrum of media, mainstream and social, gripped.  The first order of business for the prime minister is the formation of a cabinet – a task usually completed in the glow of the “honeymoon” period of a newly minted prime minister.  The situation now does not afford such luxuries; the pandemic has created a reality that makes every decision critical and with very little margin for error. While Malaysians have become true connoisseurs of political intrigue, there is such thing as too much of a good thing. The months of slow burn politic crisis that threatened to become a constitution flash point distracted the collective focus on twin existential problems of this generation:  the global [...]

MALAYSIA GLOBAL BUSINESS FORUM TO SUPPORT CREATIVE ECONOMY IN POST-COVID-19 RECOVERY

Malaysia Global Business Forum (MGBF) has moved to support the creative economy as the overall economy moves into a recovery phase following the COVID19 pandemic. As a step in the direction of normalcy, the MGBF has agreed to host the art exhibition “I Know You’re Somewhere So Far” by one of Malaysia’s leading young artists Mulaika Nordin. The full spectrum of the creative industries, from film to visual arts were heavily impacted over the past two years. Prior to the pandemic the creative industries were estimated to be worth some RM29.4 billion contributing 1.9% to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2019 according to a report by the Department of Statistics Malaysia. The Malaysia Global Business Forum like many businesses has evolved extensively due to the pandemic. Many of our business matching and government engagement programs have shifted to the virtual space. We are pleased to announce that our first step [...]

Budget 2022 Comments: Opportunity to build resilience in critical sectors

The upcoming budget represents an opportunity to build resilience in the critical sectors that will form the backbone of the country's future-facing economic ambitions. This however needs to be achieved in the context of managing the community sectors most impacted by COVID-19 over the past two years. The Keluarga Malaysia (Malaysian Family) approach, which is empathic and inclusive, is both timely and an appropriate approach to address those most impacted. Policy stability, especially those policies directly impacting foreign investors, remains important for business continuity. At the same time, well-managed policy developments that have taken into consideration the views of all related stakeholders and the community are welcome as the country continues to mature on its journey as a leading democracy in the region. Recent announcements by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob around Operational Safety and Health and Disaster Management are good examples, which have identified leakages upwards [...]

MGBF RELEASES A REPORT ON THE POULTRY ECOSYSTEM BASED ON BUSINESS DATA

As the global economy continues to deal with unprecedented levels of disruption caused by the pandemic and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the convergence of energy security and food security issues has become a front-of-mind issue faced by policy makers and consumers alike. In Malaysia, this has come to the surface with the emergence of several issues with poultry production, primarily chicken supply. The report by Malaysia Global Business Forum (MGBF) titled ‘Malaysia’s Poultry Ecosystem: An Analysis of Business Data’ extrapolated data from a total of 3,724 registered business entities with self-declared business activities in poultry. To gain deeper insights, the report focused on 627 companies. Out of 402 companies that filed financial data in the last 12 months, it was learnt that 55.12 per cent were profitable during this period. The MGBF report also identified 30 companies that filed losses greater than RM1 million. MGBF Founding Chairman, Nordin Abdullah, [...]

Hindsight is the new foresight

The current floods that have impacted various parts of the country have given rise to an extensive commentary on the response cycles of various stakeholders.  It has in turn led to continued crisis communications and statements in the media by agencies and ministries alike.  This binary approach to the discussion has also created a perceived “us and them” situation when in a crisis of this nature there should only be “we”. Instead of being anxious about the ongoing commentary and flood of social media comments, the government should now take the opportunity to actively listen and embrace the process. This is free business intelligence, especially if the business model is keeping people happy and safe.  Don’t let the critical data go the way of the flood waters – simply flowing into the oceans or seeping back into the soil. The challenge will be organising the information into a meaningful framework. [...]
